Should the federal government implement the Green New Deal?
Introduction
The Green New Deal is a set of globally overarching environmental and economic policy goals, first officially introduced to the U.S. Congress in 2019. The five major goals in the resolution are to:
- Goal 1- To achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions
- Goal 2- To create millions of jobs
- Goal 3- To invest in sustainable infrastructure and industry
- Goal 4- To secure access for all people to clean air, water, nature, and healthy food
- Goal 5- To prevent and remedy oppression of marginalized populations
Although a non-binding resolution first failed to pass in 2019 and has since failed again, the debate over these policies continues.
This deliberation allows students to learn and understand the provisions of the Green New Deal, explore the two sides of the debate, and deliberate whether the federal government should approve these policies.
